A Special Appeal to St Jean Brebeuf Alumni

The former clay mosaic depicting St Jean Brebeuf and his works with the Huron people.

The beautiful mosaic portrayal of St Jean Brebeuf at the entrance of the same named school has been welcoming students, staff and visitors since 1985.  It has reflected the spirit of his works teaching Catholicity among the Huron people while embracing and honouring their native ways.

Unfortunately, time has not been kind to the mosaic as the clay tiles have decayed and are no longer reparable.  A new mosaic has been prayerfully conceived by the current students based on their knowledge of the humanitarian work of St Jean Brebeuf.  The original artist, Mr. Al Gerritson, has consulted with the students and staff to design a new wood relief display in keeping with St Jean Brebeuf’s work and its legacy in the school.  Mr. Gerritson will create a lasting, meaningful wood-carved entrance to be used as a prayerful place (perhaps even a chapel space) where students and staff can gather and pray. The revitalization of the original work will ensure that anyone who enters the school, will have an appreciation of the school as a Catholic Community of Caring.

The cost of the project is $7500.  The Calgary Catholic Education Foundation has partnered with St Jean Brebeuf School to support this campaign.  This special project falls outside of the scope of the Calgary Catholic School District as it’s not related to educational resources and is not within the fundraising mandate of the school council.

How can you help?  We are reaching out to alumni to ask for their support in funding the new St Jean Brebeuf mosaic.  The goal is to raise the necessary funding by May 2019 so that an installation and dedication can be held in the Fall 2019 where all donors will be invited and recognized.  To make your charitable tax donation of $20 or more, please visit  The CCEF and in the IN HONOR OF box please indicate St Jean Brebeuf and we will redirect the funds.  All funds will be held in trust by The CCEF.
